I definitely won't be spending money to see this in the theatre, but maybe.. if I'm really bored and it's on tv, I might watch it. While drinking a lot of beer.

I'll probably watch it at some point, but not in the theater, partly because I don't want to put my money behind it and partly because they just don't let you bring your box of wine into the theater with you - and I do suspect I'll need it to sit through the entirety of the film.

Not sure if any of you guys are aware of it, but I came across the Fifty Dollars not Fifty Shades campaign which encourages those not going to see the movie in cinemas to donate the cost of their ticket to domestic abuse charities. Pretty neat idea if you're not keen on the crap in the book, although I've heard that the film omits a lot of the particularly drive-me-to-drink worthy stuff. Yup, and I have plenty of good reasons for not supporting that particular campaign at all. I'm pretty sure it was Jenny's idea to donate in lieu of or in addition to movie tickets, anyway, well before the 50Dollars crusade existed -- and I'll still be donating, but not for the 50Dollars campaign, or as a part of it. Huh, thanks for pointing that out- I wrote an article which vaguely praised 50Dollars so I'll edit the fuck out of that bit now.

My favorite line from any reviewer so far is: "Seeing Fifty Shades of Grey on Valentine's Day is like seeing Rosemary's Baby on Christmas Eve".

Having duly made a donation to a local women's shelter (I couldn't pay for this movie and not donate) my SO and I are going to see the damn film tonight. Mainly because in order to critique and understand something you at least have to see it. I'm very aware that I carry a she of baggage in my feelings about this book so I'm very interested to see what my SO, who hasn't read the books, makes of it. I will of course report back.

The baggage issue for myself is why I'm waiting til I can get it streaming somewhere. Because I know it's going to trigger me and I need to be able to stop it when I need to and go do something else before finishing it. And as I don't have a lot of money it's the best option for me.

The only person whom I'd be willing to watch it with (Due to our mutual hatred of the books) is only 17, so she can't. I'm certainly not going to watch it on my own. I don't want to buy the DVD either when it comes out. I may add it to my Lovefilm list eventually though.

Thanks for that blog post, Katje. I'd never heard of that group before so if I see that campaign pop up on my Facebook feed or something, I'll pass the word along. Right off the bat, though, the "Fifty Dollars" part struck a raw nerve with me. Glad I'm not the only one. I'm looking forward to reading more in depth from the links on your blog when I get the chance too, so thank you again. (and as an aside, Katje is one of my favorite names ever. Even spelled that way. If my son had been a girl Katje was a contender for the middle name. I'm a bit of a name nerd hence the random name love. ) I don't plan on seeing the movie, but I still wanted to donate the price of a movie ticket or two. The thing is, I don't have a lot of money to donate (and can't seem to donate to my local shelter online, which complicates things). So, I'm planning on doing some closet spring cleaning (it's pretty much spring where I live right now), and donate the clothes I don't wear and that my son no longer fits in to the local Women's Shelter. Probably with some toys, books and such too. I do have a question for those that have seen it: Do Jamie/Christian and Dakota/Ana seem as awkward around each other as they seem in interviews and photos in the film? Every time I've seen them together they just seem like they have no chemistry and each would rather be absolutely anywhere else.

Money is always great but clothes, toys etc. are great as well. Second... yes, kinda. I like the director. And she did a great job. The movie looks pretty and she really knows how to put the leads into the right frame. But no. No chemistry. As far as I am concerned. As seems, and I am saying that without being mean, that Dakota Johnson feels unhappy with the material as long as she has clothes on. And Jamie Dornan just doesn't know what to do with Chedward. He looks conflicted the whole time.

Some guy in the audience shouted out that the books were rubbish and it got the only genuine laugh of the whole night out of him.

I watched it last night and the only thing that made me gasp in the sex scenes was Dakota's ribs. I know we come in all shapes and sizes, but with the lighting and her poses highlighting her bones rather than her curves, I personally found it disquieting.
Also, I think Jamie's wooden acting might have been due to him trying so hard to stop lapsing into his native accent. He was not successful - it was all over the place.

Probably with some toys, books and such too. This is a good idea. Our local shelter helps women move into apartments so you could buy cheaper items like toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other toiletries. Canned food is cheap to donate too. They also need formula and diapers which cost a lot more though. Or a small box of crayons and a coloring book, matchbox cars, etc... Anything helps and is greatly appreciated. I don't plan on seeing it in the theater, can't give money to this at all. But like others here in order to be able to know it enough to argue I will watch it, just like I read the books. But I borrowed those from the library to again not give anyone any money towards this.

And yeah, the name of the thing immediately made me twitch, which is why I even ended up doing the research in the first place. Something felt off. And thanks! I actually chose the name Katje back in 2008 and legally changed my name to it last year. "Kat" in Dutch is "cat", and the "-je" suffix is diminutive, so it means "little cat" in Dutch. I'm not sure if it has the same meaning in other European languages. I am a total name nerd too, so I completely understand. ^_^

Ahhh. I didn't know that meaning of it in Dutch. In a few of the Slavic/Cyrilic languages (polish and Ukranian especially, I think) it's a diminutive of and of the variations of Catherine (Katarina, Katarzyna, Katřyna, etc). My husband is only the 3rd generation born in the US in his family and they still celebrate a lot of Polish, Ukranian and Russian customs. The name Catherine has been used in some form or another in pretty much every generation of his family, and it seems like every form of the name has been used. And there are a lot of forms and spellings of Catherine. So, we wanted to work a form of it in a future daughter's name and were keen on the Eastern European versions to honor that heritage. Since almost all the forms of Catherine had been used before, we considered Katje or Kaja, which would be the equivalent of Katie and/or Kate in English, but Katje and Kaja are such lovely names on their own. I know, like the names they're derived from, there's many spellings used for them. My husband was more keen on Katja or Katya (he worried the J would cause big pronunciation issues in English) and on Kaya or Kaia. Katje is still my favorite form with Katja being a close second, but now knowing Kaje translates to "little cat" in Dutch, I like it even more. I have one son and it's likely not possible for me to have more babies, so I won't have a daughter with Katje in any form in her name, but some time in the future I may just have to use it for a pet so it doesn't go to waste. and now the irony of naming a dog Katje is really making me want another dog, lol! (/name nerd topic derail) sorry y'all.

All variations of Irish accent are meant to be the hardest to get rid of. I saw a clip and really felt holding back his accent was his main goal. Without the beard and accent he's pretty bland.
