Buffy the Vampire Slayer is now 18 years old. When this series first aired, I was just 11. Now I feel really, really old.

I can't believe it's been 18 years since it first came on. Don't feel so old mrgbh, I was in my last semester of college when it premiered, so if you feel old, I must be ready to move into a retirement home.
I know these days the themes of the show are dated; the 90's riotgrrl version of feminism, female sexuality (i.e. sex is bad for young women), Xander was a "nice guy" it was told in a sympathetic manner, Kendra's whole story, etc...
But the show does have a nice little place in my heart, and I love it more from a nostalgia standpoint.
One of my favorite episodes was with Clea Duvall as the invisible girl, I related to her in a weird way because my self esteem was in the toilet in high school. I also loved the Johnathan episodes pre him joining the "supervillians" and anything that featured Anya, she was my favorite in later seasons.

I was ... maybe 15 when it arrived in germany? I loved Buffy. I wasn't as deep as my love for Sailor Moon (YES. Sailor Moon. I still love it. Shut up. It's like.. totally cool). And through the innocent eyes of a teenager the love story between Buffy and Angel was beautiful.
I still have a special place in my heart for Buffy. I always will.

I think that show may have made me a horrible person for a long time. I've already mentioned that I was 11 when it started (But I may have been 12 by the time it swam over the pond) and I idolised Xander. He was funny, charming and the cutest girl on the show was his best friend. Then he even started dating the popular girl. So my young, impressionable mind latched onto him as a role model. And so I became a 'Nice Guy'. Fortunately, Oz exists and I started to idolise him even more. But shaking off the misconceptions I had still took a long time. I still struggle to not slip back into those habits even today. In other words, fuck Xander. (I apologise for my language).

I'll never forget the time I had a friend over to my house and we sat and watched Buffy with my mother. I was probably 14 years old at the time.
My mom turns to my friend and says, "God, if I ever met Spike, bragandbounce would have a new dad!"
We were reminiscing about this recently, and my friend said, "Funny, ten years later that's how *I* feel."
