I watched Avengers: Age of Ultron yesterday. It was glorious. If you watch it (Correction, when you watch it) bring tissues. Both for tears of grief and for tears of laughter. And there's a lot of laughter.

Well, it doesn't matter because it's not a real person. If it was a real person being named that, it's a bit like calling a girl 'Adolf', to be honest. I think people should think about at least googling the name they want to give their child. My friend and my sister both did that. Eg if your surname is Hindley you might not want to go with Myra for your daughter. Then sometimes there is bad luck too - like my friend who called her son Dexter and then just after he was born, that series started. So everyone thought she'd named him after that character. As you do. I was born in the mid-80s. My Mother originally planned to name me George Michael. After the umpteenth time someone asked "After the singer?" she relented and changed my middle name to Bobby. But she only did that to make my initials GBH. Yep, my name is a pune, or play on words.

I actually prefer names with unusual spellings. I have an abjectively horrendous memory so it helps me remember people (There are some people I've known for years but can't remember their names because they're so generic).
Subtitles annoy me, but only when it's in a language I understand (So English). Youtube has recently started putting subtitles on some videos by default. It's really frustrating because I always read the words before the character finishes talking. So if there's a big reveal or some massive plot twist (I am your father's brother's cousin's former room-mate style) it gets ruined.
But by the same token, I get frustrated by people who refuse to watch a foreign film just because it's subtitled. It's just a little bit of reading, what's so bad about that?

I'm beginning to think that posting these in the 'What is everybody writing?' thread doesn't make much sense, so I've decided to create a thread purely for this purpose. And so, here's my 5th review, Alice In Wonderland. The one with Johnny Depp. And it was darn hard to write. gbhreviews.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/alice-in-wonderland.html

Something I can't understand is why every girl with natural red hair goes through a phase of dyeing it jet black. Sure, I love jet black hair, I think it looks gorgeous. But compared to natural red? It's like you've won the Lottery of natural hair colours and you're just painting it black? My problem isn't that some people do this, but it seems to be every last one. It just confuses me is all.

I work in a shop and I've noticed some habits multiple customers seem to share.
When someone sets off the store alarms and just stands there. Especially when there's no-one else around and they look dumbfounded as if they can't believe it's them. And instead of walking to the till so I can deactivate whatever is setting off the alarm (Because I'm usually busy serving someone else) they just wait. Just walk three feet backwards and the alarm will stop.
And then there're the people who insist that self-service machines will put me out of work. Despite the fact that my job is to help customers use those exact machines. And I can't force them to use it. And there are several types of transaction that can't go through the machine without a staff member to help, if at all. Even after I point all of this out they still refuse to listen.

Best food in the world? Roast bacon joint. Don't need to add anything. I could just eat that all day, even after it's gone cold.

When I broke up with my ex I did it on New Year's eve. The idea was that it would then be something that happened last year and therefor this year could be better. The year that started with her getting over me, not the year that started with me breaking up with her.
I still felt like a horrible person for it.
But yeah, last day of March is really bad timing.

I'm going to borrow Xebi's analogy and expand on it, in order to clarify what I mean. Assuming I'm the victim there are five possibilities.
1) It was unintentional and they make amends. Basically, they step on my foot and say sorry. No matter how much it may have hurt, I will forgive them. I even had my foot broken once, but the guy who did it offered to drive me to hospital and was very apologetic. Of course I'm not going to get angry at him.
2) It was unintentional but they don't care. In this scenario the person's response to my scream of pain is "Whatever." While I would certainly be upset, I wouldn't wish any ill back. It's just not worth it.
3) It was intentional but they make amends. My favourite Frozen line is spoken by one of the trolls. "People make bad choices when they're mad or scared or stressed." Sure, the person may have wanted to harm me, but if they realise later that they feel guilty about it and try to make it up to me, I'll give them that chance. Of course, if they keep hurting me, then eventually their words will ring hollow. But I'll always give people the benefit of the doubt.
4) It was intentional and they don't care. This is the bad one. In the analogy, it's like someone in a bar stamping on my foot and then saying "What're you gonna do about it?" By response would always be to leave. I don't have to remain around people who hurt me and don't care.
5) It was intentional and they intend to keep doing it. In the analogy this is where the above guy follows me out of the bar and clubs me around the back of the head. In the real world, this represents hate crimes and harassment. This is the kind that requires laws and their enforcement.
I would place Golliwogs into either 1 or 3. Personally I don't think they were intended as offensive but I can see how they could be considered as such. And in that day and age there was far worse. Heck, even Mickey Mouse was racist back then.

To me, it comes down to intent. If something is designed to be offensive on racial lines, then I will fight against it until my last breath. But if it's just accidental? Then I really couldn't care less and if someone takes offense by my lack of offense, that's their problem.

I wouldn't blame a child for having one. The difference is adults who should know better still saying the dolls are not racist. It's fine that kids had them back in the day but they shouldn't be on sale now. I can see that they're racist, even if it was intentional or not. But banning them is not the answer. The best response (In my experience, so take with a pinch of salt) is to make it funny. I've always found that the best way to diffuse offense is to make jokes. If everyone's laughing then no-one's fighting.

Also have just seen a thing on Facebook about golliwogs being removed from sale (Huh? How are golliwogs still a thing at all? I thought they stopped being made in the 70s...), and there were all these people protesting saying they were 'cute' and 'not racist'. GOLLIWOGS NOT RACIST. What is this, the full moon or something? First that girl goes nuts because I did NOT call her stupid, and now this... I had a Golliwog as a child. I've still got it in storage somewhere. It's missing its' jacket, nose, hair, buttons, the eyes have been reduced to outlines of string, same with the mouth and one of the arms has been lost. And as a child I just thought of it as a fun toy. And then people suddenly started telling me that they were racist and I was racist for defending them. I don't get it, how can it be racist to not care about race?
